Hi @TheSoftwareGuy
My uninformed suspicion is that the minister's recent announcement about opening the Smart ID card issuance to PR and naturalized foreign nationals "in the near future" might have something to do with this. Other than that, what I have read on this forum is that 26(6) PR ID applications take a minimum of 3 months because of marriage certificates/status having to be verified back in the countries of origin. Other Categories have a much shorter timeline. Then again, there's the fact that not everyone has the same experience...
Do you mind sharing if this delay has been affecting your life negatively, since receiving your PR?
Nothing negatively but we still need to apply for Driving licenses within a year time. It's a hassle with JMPD on road.

Good day guys,

I collected my wife's ID today from DHA, and it took around 5 months to process.

I have a quick question: my wife got her PRP under spousal and on the SA ID book my surname is printed instead of my wife's surname?

Is DHA going to put husband's surname on the ID book, as on PR she got her own surname ?

Can you please someone kindly advise?

Thanks
Congratulations @expat_007 Did you get a notification or you called to check for the status?

Generally speaking, they shouldn't change the surname until your wife put it on the form. But you never know home affairs ever changing rules.

I am still waiting for my PRP, brother. But I have had a SA drivers licence for years. At a roadblock, the minute they see that I don't have an ID number on it ( you get a traffic number instead until you come back with an ID), the dynamics change immediately...
Yeah i Understand, They just want money. If you have SA license, are you not ed on NATIS? Why they want a TRN?

Hope you will get the PRP soon.

Congratulations to your wife!!!
The changing of surname is being done automatically on the system by the computer without the person applying directly on the form. My wife and I got married more than 10 years ago and she never applied for a new id book or a smart one but curiously she receives sms and all types of courriers with the new surname which is my surname;there was a time we needed a document from dha and she was told to apply first for the new id since the system updated her status.

Thank you. From your words to God's ears!

It's a system integration thing. The system has to be able to track you so that the authorities can issue you a traffic fine/sanction whenever applicable. Our port or driver's license numbers from home do not have the same format as the SA ID number, so the eNATIS system is configured to generate a similar number, instead. Essentially, a TRN is a foreigner's "ID Number" in the system. Until you become a Permanent Resident.

So yeah, car disc in check, roadworthiness in check, zero outstanding fines on the vehicle, on the license, but the minute the officer realizes that it's a TRN on the card, the situation changes 😅

I called DHA center every week to followup and get the status of the application.

We didn't received any SMS for collection and when I phone last week they advised it's ready for collection.

Hope this helps.

Thanks

But you have just said you collected your wife's ID. So what surname is on the ID? Or you meant that you have just collected your wife's PRP?

Hi Jollem,

Hope you are doing well.

Yes I collected my wife's SA ID book and on the SA ID book I see my surname instead of my wife surname. when we applied for SA ID after getting the PRP( my wife surname was printed correctly) we wrote my wife surname according to PRP certificate but when we collect SA ID I can see my surname on SA ID book. Is it the standard behavior as my wife got PRP under spousal category.

Can you please kindly advise?

Thank you.

Oh, I understand what you are saying now. That is definitely a mistake from DHA. Go and get it corrected. The surname on your wife's ID should be as per the application form you completed, and I guess you put your wife's surname on the application form right?
It doesnt matter that the PRP is under spousal category, your wife can still keep her surname if that is what you guys want.

Thank you Jollem for your response.

We applied the ID at Eldorodo, Soweto.

Which category we need to apply for correction?

We still go to the same DHA office for 1st time issuing ID book or we can get it corrected at near by DHA offices like Centurion etc.

If we submit for correction can we travel with SA ID we have?

Please kindly advise.

In Pretoria which are the DHA offices/branches that do I.Ds for PR holders? Does my spouse need to be there, if it's a spousal PR? I hope this is not the case as spouse is away. Anyone who has recent experience, please share. Thank you!

I see a few people here who know about PRP holders getting ID's, can someone help explain to me please exactly what does a PRP holder need an ID for? Is it just the convenience?

- e.g. you can't open a Tyme bank without an ID number, but even temporary residents generally can open a bank , so PRP's should be able to as well without an ID at other banks?

- either way you can't vote

- you can get a ZA driver's license without an ID

so what do you definitely need an ID for?

Hi,
My understanding is that this is required by law. Once granted permanent residence, you have to be added to the country's population in order to be "visible" like every citizen. You're right about applying for things like drivers licenses and bank s, but that is only up to a certain time limit. You WILL eventually be required to produce an ID book/card after a certain time "or else".

There's an example of foreign national not so long ago, who managed to get high up the corporate ladder at a government agency in the NW once he got his PR. This only went for so long, unfortunately, because it was demanded that he produce an ID. As it turned out, he lost his job and is now fighting deportation in court because it was discovered that his PR was fraudulent. Off the topic, but I was just using the example to illustrate my point.
