Hello ALL,

We are planning early retirement next year and move for few years to Spain (Mallorca) on non-lucrative visa. Recearching if its possible to buy private medical insurance if we both have pre-existing conditions? My husband has prostate cancer and I have Lupus. Currently we live in California and have good medical insurance through employer..

I spoke with insurance agent in Spain and she said that I will not be able to buy medical insurance that covers our health problems...

Is it true?

Thank you in advance,

Nina and Alex

I'm in Spain just now on a final trip to see if we can live in Spain.

Would come on the NLV, my wife is due her S1 in 2 years. I am a toy boy though and have ages to wait. I have had a heart attack, 6 years ago and a TIA last year, yes she is wondering that she got a faulty model.

I understand that the private medical insurance I need for the 2 years will not cover anything that goes wrong with my chest or brain.

My question is would the Spanish health care system treat me free of charge? Would they treat me and then produce a massive bill at the end? Would they just look at me doing a dying fly routine and do nothing? Can I get the Convinio Especial and pay for it at the same time as private health insurance?

The worry is something goes wrong in the 2 years till the S1 kicks in and could not risk financial ruin if something bad happened health wise.

Any solutions will be gratefully received or to point me in the right direction of who to ask to get 100% correct answers.

Cheers
how old do you have to be to get yur S1?

Hi all. Need a little advice and help please. Looking at moving to Spain on a Non Lucrative Visa, under 60 so no S1 but I have pre-existing medical conditions. We are not planning on moving for maybe 1-2 years but how do you find out if pre-existing conditions will be a problem? Can we find out beforehand by phoning or ing an insurance company, or do we go for a full quote with a health insurance provider filling in the health questionnaire? The reason we ask is that we have read some worrying information which indicate that this could stop us in our tracks! Thanks
did you get this sorted?

So I have just spoken to an Insurance company who has told me that they can provide medical cover and what you do is DO NOT list your pre existing medical conditions and you certificate will be accepted (or you can still state your pre existing medical conditions but have them excluded from the policy). If you choose to not list them, after 12 months you apply for Convenio Especial and you will be covered by the state and if you have an issue relating to your pre existing medical conditions the state has to see you. Has anyone experienced this or been given this advise?

well as I was very dubious of what this company said is why I asked the question, as I said after 12 mnths if you have a situation relating to your condition, surely the Dr will say when did you have this medical condition and it wont be , just recently you will be saying years ago, it didnt make sense to me,

Are you covered if you do not declare pre-existing conditions(PEC). I thought you would sign a contract with them that says you have declared all PEC. If they found out then that is a risk you may not be covered.
I ask this as no soy abogado.

All the other companies I spoke to say they will cover me but NOT my pre existing conditions, this company is telling me NOT to highlight them and after 12 months I will be covered by the state of spain? First time I am hearing this which is why I am asking the question.

There are a lot of companies and brokers that I feel are encouraging people to lie to get coverage. I personally have too much integrity to try and get around the rules. Every company that told me they would cover my pre existing condition came back with a quote excluding the condition. This screams fraud to me because the Visa requirement is insurance with no exclusions. I am struggling with this. Do I get insurance to get the Visa and pay out of pocket for what they won’t cover? If I do this, am I participating in the fraud?

To me, the problem would be that when the visa is applied for the insurance wouldn't be of the required level, & the applicant would know it, so logically, yes, would be complicit in the fraud.

If the applicant is successful but later found out to have lied, presumably the visa could be revoked.

I'm not a lawyer either, but visas can be revoked, & a visa which was issued basically on a lie would seem to be a prime candidate for revocation.

So it appears that even the top insurance companies will issue a policy that meets Visa requirements. But they excluded pre existing conditions. I would think this would be a major issue? It seems to be almost normal in the research I have done.

I've just read a post on a private FB group (so I can't share the actual post).

The couple declared the wife's breast cancer of two years prior to the visa application, but now think that the broker didn't tell the health insurer, because the company has refused to renew hers, but not his at the end of the first year, due to her cancer. They have in fact refused to insure her at all.

So she is currently without any kind of health insurance, so the visa renewal won't happen.

Depending on where she lives, she should be able to the convenio especial, & if so, that hopefully will happen quickly enough for the visa renewal - or maybe there will be some other company that will insure her.

If not...she'll have to return to the UK.

That is terrible! This is why I am so concerned about finding an ethical agent! I have been told by 3 different agents that they can give me a policy that meets ALL visa requirements. 2 of them have specifically said the policy will NOT include my pre existing condition. Which in my eyes is fraudulent. The other says it’s included. How can I make sure it is and they are not pulling a fast one? This is so frustrating.

Hello. A year ago I was diagnosed with low level grade 1 prostate cancer and had month long radiotherapy sessions. My PSA blood results have gone down to low levels. I was hoping to apply for the NLV in two years time but understand any healthcare policy cannot have exclusions. By then it would be 3 years from diagnosis and Dr reckons I’ll be cancer free by then. Does anyone have experience of the NLV application and healthcare policies with a previous cancer diagnosis? Thank you.

I've moved your question to the end of a current existing thread about this.

Get yourself a coffee & settle down for a read, then by all means ask any further questions that you might have.
