I am a Canadian male who lived in Japan for about 10 years until 2011. During that time, I married a Japanese citizen and we had 2 kids. We moved to Canada in 2011 and have been living here since. Fast forward 12 years... We have been married for 18 years and the kids are now teenagers. Unfortunately over time, the relationship has broken down. Although I have tried really hard to avoid this outcome, I have chosen to separate from her.
She is currently back home in Japan visiting family. I made up my mind to do this while she's been away and told her recently of my wish to separate. I have spoken to a lawyer and I think I understand the process of divorce here in Canada.
An Australian friend of mine had lived in Japan for many years and was married to a Japanese woman as well. They got divorced in Japan. He suggested that getting divorced in Japan could potentially be easier, quicker, and a lot less costly.
I don't know if this is possible, and if it is, whether it would be beneficial for me to get divorced in Japan. He had been living with his wife primarily in Japan during their marriage while we have been in Canada for the past 12 years.
Any information, suggestions, or advice would be appreciated. If you have any questions about my situation please ask and I will clarify. Thanks.
