Trump’s Tariff Would Cost the Typical American Household Roughly $1,500 Each Year

A new Center for American Progress Action Fund analysis finds that the proposed across-the-board tariff would amount to a roughly $1,500 annual tax increase for the typical household, including a $90 tax increase on food, a $90 tax increase on prescription drugs, and a $120 tax increase on oil and petroleum products. This tax increase would drive up the price of goods while failing to significantly boost U.S. manufacturing and jobs.

Trump is a bad choice

But this would bring back jobs, real jobs to Americans, your fellow Americans some do not have a college degree so manufacturing pays well.

You must have forgotten during Covid that the US was short on certain supplies made in China now, computer chips caused shortages in electronics (rare earth metals China, progressives stopped mining in America) and the vehicle manufacturer in the US $100,000 trucks now! what about vehicle's made in Mexico because of the union tactics and their higher wages, cushy pensions, same thing is happening with the minimum wage, less employees higher prices fast food and the restaurant industry.

The progressive has zero business skills and they'll continue to destroy free enterprise and capitalism.

But this would bring back jobs, real jobs to Americans, your fellow Americans some do not have a college degree so manufacturing pays well.
It isnt that easy:
/If USA raise custom fees, then expect other countries as e g European Union will do similar against USA, so US companies will sell LESS at export...
/Salary differences is much higher than 10 percent, so I suppouse very few if any companies will bring home production they have abroad allready.

Does anyone know the result of Trump's actions to do similar back when he became president?
Philippine Call Centers got scared by that news, but it seem no big difference...

It is a misunderstanding that a tariff is a magic bullet to bring back jobs.

The US industries offshored jobs because it was cheaper and companies only care about profit. While a tariff can alter the price of goods it is like using a sword to perform a delicate surgery.

The US companies fell behind in reinvestment and allowing other countries to shoulder the cost of new manufacturing plants and using cheap almost slave labor, allowed for bigger profits.

Over time the other countries costs have risen and the cost of transportation including delays and risks have reduced the benefits of long distance manufacturing.

Companies are trying to return to the US but face problems. The lack of trained employees, the lack of healthcare not paid by employers, the lack of resources like water and electricity, the cost of not causing environmental damage are some of the issues.

In case people have not noticed the pool of workers in the US is dropping because there are not enough births. This is happening in a lot of countries. The easiest solution and one the US has used since it was founded is to take in immigrants. For some reason the US is restrictioning immigration when they need people the most. The politics behind it is too much to get into but it is clear that until there are reasonable immigration policies the US will not be able to grow.

The total failure of the US educational system to produce people with proper modern skill sets is absolute. The future is technology and not what the old people as manufacturing jobs. Robotics and being able to run the equipment requires advanced training.
While the service sector and farming will need less highly skilled people there is no pool of US citizens that want those jobs. That could be served by either permanent or temporary immigrants.

The US's total inability to deal with healthcare is another big issue with the cost of employees and goods and services. This view that healthcare is something that poor people just don't deserve, costs the economy millions if not billions in lost productivity and taxes. Removing healthcare from employers will allow the US to get back into being competitive with other countries.

The US could be a leader in resource conservation and environmental protection but instead the old people in charge refuse to change. One example is the resistance to updating building codes to include new technologies like solar power. The thinking that it costs too much to manufacture without polluting the environment for decades to come is short-sighted at best. The US has the ability to jump the technologies forward to address the replacement of the older processes, while making money and employing people. But the old people would rather pay politicians to allow things like incandescent light bulbs to stay instead of moving forward.

Change drives our lives, not looking at the past and thinking it was so perfect. No one is taking away our jobs but us.

I predicted allready around 1995 "western" countries are "doomed" in the long run by the big salary difference.
=NOT dieing "western" economies, but trend DOWN in "western" countries compared to e g SE Asia while e g SE Asia trend UP, such going on until the cost gap become small enough to not have production away anymore.
BUT that was my prediction back then. Now I have modified it to perhaps "western" companies will NEVER move home production by with raised incomes in low cost countries many there afford to buy more things so the market there become HUGE, so why would they move the production ever...?

From what I there was a huge imbalance when trading with China
It was some funny back when USA lifted the trade ban against China, because USA had to high believes about themselves - as often :) - believed USA would sell much more to China than the opposite, but it ended with China exported MUCH more 🤣
Trump also would like to bring back manufacturing jobs
He said that before he got elected first time, but did it become any such?
The college privileged educated couldn't care less because they're well off and want to save the world, couldn't care less about their fellow Americans
So why are so many poor Americans vote for the RICH peoples party = Republicans ?? :)
And now China is selling cars, nice looking, they have them here, but who would trust a Chinese engine
China make BOTH crap and top quality. Many suppoused to be "western" brands are made in China... 🤣 (Sometimes designed and/or assembled in "western" country to try to fool people the products arent made in China or other low cost country.)
Trump will get rid of these Liberal bureaucrats that seem to hold on to lifelong jobs
But isnt it as in Sweden in USA too, similar crap among politicians and bosses in public service UNDEPENDING of political side...? :)

(I stoped voting in Sweden around 1986, when they had made an extreem stupid law concerning businesses and NONE had made reservation against it  So none worth voting at...
And I havent noticed any improvement concerning stupidity since then... :)

At the end of the day Trump has no substance. It’s all memes and angry rhetoric with no real thought out plans or policies. Just today, Trump shared an image of President Biden bound and gagged. Part of this is intentional because MAGA doesn’t care about policy. They just want to vote for someone who hates the same people they hate.

How many times during his first (and hopefully last) presidency did we hear him say "I have a great plan about xyz. To be released in about 2 weeks"

GOP have held the majority congress for quite a while already. What have they achieved? Nothing.

Wackos like MTG & Boebert, with mouths so big, there's no room in their head for brains. Just full of hatred. Preaching to their constituents the benefits being brought to their communities by infrastructure bills. But these are bills that they voted against !!

Mr. Cebra, you got me! I actually went to your profile to read your past posts and try to get a feel of who you are. A large part of my coming to the Phillippines was due to the politics in America. I see very little difference between Biden and Trump ethically, however, policy wise it is night & day. As someone who had to delay retirement 3 years from 62 to 65 because I lost over half of my 401K during the Obama/Biden years, only to recoup a little less than what I started with when Trump came into office which was enough to be financially able to move here, I am grateful to Trump.
I left a government office where the overwhelming majority of the workers were scheming friends and family. Trying to get anything useful done and not getting blame for every one of their mistakes was impossible. I can understand Trump's failures but also ire how he tried so valiantly to get his priorities done despite the swamp (no funding, uniparty operatives planted in his istration, etc.) My major criticism of Trump is that he is totally naive and let the uniparty destroy him.
Everyone has an opinion and is entitled to it. I am not a blind Trumper. I form my own opinions from what I see, touch and feel, rather than some media outlet content. I had the privilege of graduating from Obama's high school. I was taught how elites target control of the media, the example was Rupert Murdoch's attempt to buy out American media distribution hubs owned by the British, in order to control the narratives.
I youtube America in Cebu and almost cry everyday to see the country I served 20 years in the Navy degenerate into a hot mess I never thought possible. The greatest thing the Navy did for me was allow me to travel all over the world. I discovered for an extremely large population of diverse races, religions and culture, America does it the best. As to the 10% tariff, I have a much different opinion than yours. Mine is based on what I was taught about the engine that drives capitalism which is based largely upon constant monetary flow. How best to achieve this flow is debatable however, tax breaks play a major role. I believe the tariff's purpose is to shift production and jobs back to America by lessening the benefit the rich uniparty elites get when they move their businesses outside of the U.S. Try to all the youtubes videos of Trump saying how he used the threat of tariffs to get other country leaders to do things beneficial to the U.S and how it stops manufacturing plants from moving out of country. Tariffs are extremely powerful.
I swore off religion and politics when I moved here. This will be my only post in either vein. God bless America, Regards.

The top 1% of Americans have about 16 times more wealth than the bottom 50%

I really hate political arguments because hindsight often determines the winner of a viewpoint and yet we live in the now. I am only responding to the jacking of my post and it being painted and rewritten into something it is not. Our personal lenses based on our beliefs, personalities and experiences largely contribute to our differing opinions. Yet we all have opinions and are willing to state them. Whether you agree or not, there is no arbiter nor judge for these differences nor should there be one. I believe elites exist and are the result of our capitalist economy. My belief is the 1% have coalesced in to a "uniparty" which recently became more active and pursue an agenda, to what ends, I leave it to the individual. I think we agree that rich people (elites) are instigating political policy that hurts the classes below them. It is the composition of this elite party to which we seem to have a disagreement. I believe it is Republicans and Democrats and all other flavors of political parties (heres looking at you, Bernie) between that make up the ultra rich class in America that have ed with the "elites" worldwide. So "elites" are the ultra wealthy on the planet, not just in the U.S.
It is good to have strong convictions and opinions. Again, I respect yours and have read your post about 5 times to ensure I get a grasp on what you are conveying. It saddens me some people have been displease with my post, it was not my intent. My intent was to express my own experience and another provide my interpretation to the same data we are exposed to. If you are spun up about it, I apologize since life is to short and full of negatives to be getting riled up over something as divisive as politics (or religion) and there aren't any winners for these types of arguments. I disagree my thoughts are rhetoric and your opinions, the reality. I can see the difference between Trump and Biden and have said neither is ethical, and I am adding both are criminal. I also believe the past president has a long term effect on the economy even after leaving office and that the sitting president and HIS CABINET and POLICIES can have a major impact on the economy, including the stock market. The addition of education and learning institutions nuances to my use of "elite" is disturbing. And no I am not saying our schools are anti-american and education is important to make your conclusions anymore valid than someone less educated. As to Medicare and Social Security, I am really interested on your thoughts about the deficit and its impending effects on our economy. How do we escape a recession or depression? If american banks start failing I am screwed. Anyhoot, to get me to post after saying I wouldn't post in politics or religion, gives you one point up on me, congrats. Fun fact, I graduated from Punahou high school after being adopted at 14 years old, which is a miracle at that age if not unheard of. Punahou is private, college preparatory academy and one of my teachers was kicked out of Berkley for being too radical, go figure. He taught an eye opening course on american history, god bless him. Regards.

@Kanakatak
Your post is full of the rhetoric that is dividing America.
If you don't see the ethical or moral difference between Biden and Trump you are not listening to the two men speak or watching the various legal cases against Trump.
The actions of the stock market are not responsibility of any president if so I think you are not really looking at the performance during the Trump years.
As soon as you use the term 'elites' I know you are buying into the division in America. The use of the term is somehow trying to say people with an education are bad and can't be trusted. You are trying to say all our educational institutions are anti-american. The simple fact is that people that get educated are more likely to not be blind sheep to people trying to lead them through fear.
I believe if you have a person that threatens to bomb your country or impose massive tarrifs across the board you become afraid that this person does not care about the consequences of their actions.
A lot of the issues with corporations in this country is that they are only interested in income redistribution, away from workers and in their pockets. The massive pay divide between people that produce the product and people that sit around making decisions that are at best a 50/50 of being correct is a huge problem. The fact that the Trump policies only seek to enrich the rich are always ignored in this talk of solutions. The fact that Trump wants to dismantle Medicare and social security also seek to be lacking in your points. Maybe looking at a person's full record might be difficult to allow you to them but it is reality.

@Kanakatak

God bless all countries but unfortunately most are tarred with the same brush when it comes to political ideologies no matter the party, religions the same, minority beliefs etc. will always have left and right views, the haters and the lovers.

I tend to agree that living in the Philippines where the politics are none of my business and sure I have my opinions but as a simple guest here really don't have to think about it, simply live and enjoy. I watch the news every morning for 2/3 hours (wee hours) and while educational both Fox and CNN and N and N give basic news events but very visible the party alignments and bias while ABC Australia is a little tame and seems very neutral, as it should be. The news I see coming out of the many countries is factional and money politically driven, simply watch Russian state news, twisted and distorted to the enth degree to suit the leader/political needs for power, not the people or country. Dictatorship rings a bell, time for reflection.

Time to move guys. Enjoy what time we have left to us.

OMO.

Cheers, Steve.

It makes me laugh when the GOP accuse the Dems of overspending tax payers money.

A Quick Look at the facts, easily verified:

Clinton inherited a $290 billion deficit and left behind a $236 billion surplus. That’s a swing of about $526 billion.

Bush 43 was so incompetent that he turned that surplus into a $1.4 trillion dollar deficit. That means you would need a budget swing three times as large as Clinton accomplished to reverse that damage. Obama did more than match Clinton’s feat, bringing the deficit down to $585 billion.

But then IQ45 came in and became the first President in history to serve a full term and increase the deficit every year he was in office, leaving us with a $3.1 trillion deficit.

Biden cut almost $400 billion from the deficit year one, almost matching Clinton’s eight-year accomplishment in a single year without making a dent.
By the end of 2022, he had cut it to $1.4 trillion, meaning Biden cut the deficit enough in only two years that it would have eliminated the deficit GW Bush left behind.
End of 2023, it had increased to $1.7 trillion, but still almost half of Trump's.

All aside the sheep vote for a person and not the policies without thinking of where that's going to leave any country and us plebians that voted for popular and not next week. As said I care little these days as I'm gainfully retired but I do oft times think of my kids and grandkids for their future. Our generation (baby boomers) rode the sheep and cattle back, oil and gas, industry etc. and left a legacy for our progeny to sort out, I'm sure they will look at us with disdain in the history books. Rape and pillage.

We are doing our bit to help with less driving, stand alone power, recycling and composting but and OMO the damage is done and now a downward spiral for most countries. The world is very different now compared to 30/40 years ago, not living in the past simply the future or lack thereof.

Cheers, Steve.

This savior complex people have concerning one person like Trump is what is distributing. There is no answer that does not involve people stopping this finger pointing and make some sacrifices for the future. How about some comion instead of vitriol.

Having people in office that can work together and face facts that we can not survive with this rich vs poor economy.

The resources of the world are dwindling and if you think the current political landscape will think about those at the bottom with no water or food you are blind.

Term limits and the outright preventing of financial gain by being in office or after is a good start. Stopping candidates from taking any money from anyone would make it easier for better candidates to run. Ofcourse you would need people running that can accept losing.

We all lose from time to time amcan but some humans take it/accept better than others, all that crap aside we the fools/sheep are the idiots that put them in office to govern a country, sad and more sad but as Mel Brooks said history of the world. I'm very happy to live in the Philippines and watch, laugh and cry I'm out of it until some other country want's the Philippines. coming but doubt I'll be around.

Our world is teetering at a few minutes to 12. Money.

Cheers, Steve.

NOTE! I am "neutral" so I am against all crap undepending of which side they belong to :)
In Swedish messure I am politicaly in the middle and have stoped voting because there are only crap parties to vote at. The few good PERSON politicians at high level, are so few so they soon give up geting tired of having to do with such idiots...
I see very little difference between Biden and Trump ethically,
🤣 Biden is a I believe kind FOOL,
while Trump is a known SCAMMER. (I dont know how much he scammed - was it New York? - at.)

Its remarkable how much embarrassing things A, which are "common knowledge" in Europe, but many AMERICANS dont seem to know!!! Are American main news chanels cencored or are that huge part of American voters ignorant idiots? :)
(In Sweden are around 20 percent of the voters sure idiots or very crap people, because they vote at new nazi party after the skinheads have let hair grow and put on suits!!! )
however, policy wise it is night & day. As someone who had to delay retirement 3 years from 62 to 65 because I lost over half of my 401K during the Obama/Biden years, only to recoup a little less than what I started with when Trump came into office which was enough to be financially able to move here, I am grateful to Trump.
Trump is CLEVER and say - and sometimes make - things to get VOTES but dont bother at all about anyone else than himself (and perhaps his family)...

Isnt it as in Sweden? The rich party side do things as lower taxes so the country get in dept, and when the other side winn they get a dept to try to solve?
I left a government office where the overwhelming majority of the workers were scheming friends and family. Trying to get anything useful done and not getting blame for every one of their mistakes was impossible.
Do you claim it wasnt same crap when Republicans was in power? 🤣 The employees are more or less the same...
In Sweden its no difference, similar crap public service undepending of which side are in power. Its because the bosses in public service are them private sector rejected - or the not rejecting companies got cleaned out by bankrumptcies... :) These crap public service bosses dont promote any of the good workers, because then it would become to obvious how crap they are... 🤣
Even when Sweden have privaticied some earlier public services, most of these privaticied ones continue to be bad because them they employ e g to caretaking come from public service, bringing that crap culture...
My major criticism of Trump is that he is totally naive and let the uniparty destroy him.
Everyone has an opinion and is entitled to it. I am not a blind Trumper. I form my own opinions from what I see, touch and feel, rather than some media outlet content.
WHAT?! 🤣🤣🤣
Trump is a KNOWN SCAMMER. How have you managed to avoid knowing that???!!!
I youtube America in Cebu and almost cry everyday to see the country I served 20 years in the Navy degenerate into a hot mess I never thought possible.
Where have you lived to avoid knowing the horrible things done since Europeans arrived and became strong enough to start TAKING things native Americans. USA act like that still =TAKE what USA want UNDEPENDING of whats right...
So not odd USA is among the most UNliked countries in the world...
(I have forgot investigation sourse. UN? I told in other topic a while ago. The research asked anyway BOTH which countries each person liked and disliked most. If I correct USA finnished second worst after NorthKorea, sure among 4 worst.)

E g
/In general "Fighting for Democrasy" claim BS. The truth is USA fight for power to USA at least since the SECOND atom bomb in Japan...
/After Americans wonn the freedom war against England - inspite of having LOWER taxes than people living in UK :) - native American tribes, which had fought at AMERICAN side, got "rewarded" by geting killed/forced away from their land
Btw a founding father - I have forgot which of them - LEARNED DEMOCRASY from these four (?) tribes, which lived in peace with each other by making agreements...
/The paranoid actions against American "communists" counting everyone with oppionions left of the Democrats as communists! In West Europe very few are coimmunists, but majority have oppinions left of American Democrats...🤣 Thats why West Europe have had much better social security system and healt care in decades than USA have still...
/1973 USA ed the military dictators AGAINST the DEMOCRATIC elected Chilenian government, because that assisted AMERICAN interests...
/Similar with Iraq. USA ed the dictator ethnic murderer Saddam Hussein - until he stoped doing what USA gained at...
/El Salvador fiasco 🤣🤣🤣 Them, who dont know can study it e g here
Too often the history of El Salvador's civil war lets the United States off too easily
and/or see the movie about how CIA was much involved...

...
(y) Thats what I suppoused but didnt know when I answered Kanakadak.
plebians that voted for popular
Much more common in USA and its much worse such happen in USA by there are the candidats BOUGHT by election campains financiers, who expect favours if his ed get elected. Musk thought of ing BOTH sides so he could expect faviours undepending of who winn 🤣
He told he changed to none f them. True? :)
Btw from news it seem Musk Putin too...
I'd be sacking my investment advisor rather than trying to blame a president.
Better sack almost all investment advisors 🤣 because most of them earn more by higher trade volume UNDEPENDING of if good or bad advise  Similar with fund handlers, they earn much even if they reach crap results!
A friend of mine handled investors for others himself, but he charged only a percentage of how much he BEATED INDEX with. But he has quit having that, only handling his own millions which he grew from starting with only 25k some assisted by me. ( = Now and then we have cooperated in finding bargains. We have NEVER been wrong when both say "Buy".)
But I stay out, switched to start businesses in Phils, since "western" stock markets got to many people paying to much so so few bargains so I dont find it worth searching such stock markets anymore, and Phils stock market has CRAZY rule, companies dont need to tell amount of shares!!! which make it impossible to calculate value of each share.
(Although investors interested in "safe" dividends, not going for higher earning bargains, can chose Phils stock market, following the rich families companies, because the rich live of dividends not salaries because of lower tax.)

While my friend and Warren Buffet more or less stay out now too by TA-idiots have pushed up the prices even more to high compared to when I skiped.
Your two last staples I suppouse depend much of COVID though by the covid money and many ignorant new investors became home at daytime stocktrade time by covid and got FOOLED by TA-tool selling promotors, so the TA-idiots got much biger influence at the prices than FA-investors...
(FA =Fundamental analysts = try to invest based at what things are WORTH.
TA =Technical analysts = ONLY look at (trade volumes and ) price changes pattern, which in big part are what other TA-idiots do...)

Btw - I KNOW theese TA buy/sale signals, so in some low volumes share trades companies/documents even litle I can TRIGGER TA-traders to sell or buy when I want to... - but thats illegal in Sweden :)
(Back when I traded shares I used TA though sometimes to decide WHEN to buy or sell, but never WHAT. I earnen much by finding bargains instead back when there were enough many such.)

Perhaps you want to what I am doing in Phils? :)
PART of reason I do it is to very poor Filipinos to earn by add jobs and pay some more than the normal.
ORIGIN plan was to make one profitable business for myself
and an other for Help-to-self-help aid ok if it just break even.
BUT during research I found some business ideas which can do BOTH for the poor and good earning for investors, so I have started businesses such instead. AFTER the salaries are paid in the slow earning expected profit will be 3 - 8 times the investment, to be shared some with the tribe in bohnuses and for leader part of work.
An American do some similar by himself. Sometimes we cooperate a bit.

BUT I dont have enough money to employ all known good workers myself in many years yet, inspite of I plan to reinvest my earnings, thats why I try to get other investors to there too.
I "had" a huge investor for huge project much biger than mine, but they blow it by making a stupid offer to Filipino owner, making owner angry by it didnt fullfil why they wanted to sell it, instead of asking me first :( I had a solution idea which BOTH would have been much better for investor AND even better for the seller than they asked for for a tiny work extra faviour. Foreign investor screwed up by not thinking "Filipino" mind and situation... :)
I believe that one is sold now, but I have some more project ideas needing some more research - not fully done - to be sure if good but it seem so so far. They are to big to ever be done with my wallet.
But there are smaller investment projects too. One can easy be r to the ed business and partly to permits we have allready, or start separate if investor prefer that, by there are more similar ones for sale than what I have bought so far. I plan to buy more such from future profits anyway. But bargain sell offers of such pop up now and then anyway by most owners get bad results by they dont know how to handle their businesses! so they offer to sell cheap... Before we bought we got 20 offers just by telling one we want to buy such. tsismis made the rest :) Most werent interesting but some.

Trump was let off easy. If there was a court judgement against you or me, and we appealed, do you think they'd allow us to just pay 38% while we filed an appeal?

So he should be gagged, if not thrown in jail for contempt of court.
The coward has been attacking the judges daughter, a young woman with nothing to do with his case. Trump proves that he's unfit to be president, over and over again.

In Michigan Trump called immigrants “animals,” and doubled down on his Hitlerian rhetoric, insisting that he will call them animals, because, he says, they’re not human.

Does that include his wife and her parents?

Trump is now sueing Andy Litinsky and Wes Moss. The two morons dumb enough to go into business with him and start Ignore The Truth Social.
He is trying to void their stock.

First rule of business: Never do business with a Trump.

It's funny and politics aside, in most western countries all are immigrants whether last month or a thousand years ago, that's what build countries, even the indigenous Aboriginals living in Australia for 60,000 odd thousand years migrated.

Tolerance as well as humility win the day, we are all human.

Left field, sorry.

Cheers, Steve.

The news I watched it was stated collectively "their all animals". We don't have crap and rhetoric liked that in Australia, most countries for that matter and anyone sprouting like that doesn't deserve my/any vote.

OMO.

Cheers, Steve.
