Does anyone know if it is possible to configure a French Orange Livebox to create a VPN to allow access to Uk streaming BBC, etc. Currently using a client VPN (Nord) which is fine on most devices, however the TVs don't have a vPN client option. Any help or pointers greatly appreciated.

I'd be surprised if it allowed you.

What I did, here in Belgium, was to buy a second router and install the VPN firmware (Expressvpn in my case) . The router connects to your main network but as a different LAN. You plug yout TV into that.

Here's how to do it with NordVPN.

The secondary router solution works well. I do that (though we use a Bouygues 4G box until our fibre is "soon" installed), with a router flashed with ExpressVPN, then log my Apple TV into that wifi network and access our US based content providers. Alternately, you could see if there's a streaming hardware platform that will give you access to the UK providers you want and that has a VPN app. I know that the Amazon Firestick 4K has an ExpressVPN app available, which also works well. As a bonus, we have a smart TV and connect it directly to our Bouygues wifi (French IP address), so that we can also log onto streaming providers "from " too. You get the best of both worlds that way.

any tips you can share on configuring the Orange Livebox 5 so as to have a (second) OpenVPN router attached after it? I have Orange Livebox 5 full fibre tryomg to use Open VPN on Asus DSL-AC68U (which does not have a WAN port, but I have reconfigured a LAN port to be a WAN port) - having followed advice in: ASUS DSL-68 Open vpn problem not sure if I need to go down the DMZ route (which is not something in Vietnam or Korea!) - but don't really understand this! (as per: How to make VPN and the DMZ work together? | Official | ASUS Global)

I don't know if this helps but I use Surfshark VPN on a 4g router and have noticed that some programmes on iPlayer aren't available to to my laptop or Freesat box, but can be watched. However the same programmes can be ed to my tablet, so it may be something due to copyright issues or in the iPlayer programming. Maybe try looking to see if you can any programme at all.

You definitely can’t configure a French orange livebox. I called them and asked. A flat “Ah non”. I’m pretty sure it won’t let you run a vpn router either. I say this after having bought a good vpn router and spent 3 days talking to staff from the router manufacturer and vpn operator and none of them could get it working either. They were all mystified and said it was probably being blocked by the ISP. If you want it for your tv, just install the vpn on a mobile (U.K. mobile) and cast it to the tv if you can. So annoying I can’t put it into words.

I’m thinking of installing a vpn router after my modem/router, but instead of using Orange’s Livebox I bought my own compatible modem, so I’m wondering if you try that instead to avoid having to use a Livebox? That said, I only use Orange for internet service via VDSL (no TV channels or VOIP) so if you need the Livebox for either TV or telephone this may not work.

Yes @dpdapper I only need the adsl line from Orange. Which modem did you get? If I can get a modem that will work in place of the livebox, I’ll buy one, I’m already in the hole with the linksys router and mesh wifi system. The vpn router is wifi able, so my plan was to connect the tv via wifi - it is currently connected to the livebox. Again, after having spent 3 hours yesterday talking to 2 levels of assistance with NordVPN and 4 hours with linksys staff, I’m inclined to believe them when they say it can’t be done. Certainly not with a livebox4. And given how rubbish orange are on every other level, it makes sense that they would block the vpn.

OldNick. I use that specific router with my VPN details loaded, connected via a Orange LiveBox4 and it works perfectly. The router is specifically designed for use as a travel router, so it accepts most VPN setups - look at the pictures in the advert I linked to and read the reviews. In addition, it can also connect wirelessly since your hotel room (if you are using it as a portable travel router with VPN loaded) may not have an ethernet connection, so it doesn't have to be connected via ethernet to get the internet. You are welcome to dismiss it as a solution, but it works. Good luck.

The router I use behind my livebox 4 can not be used as a primary router. It is a bridge or WAP router. I had to flash it with open WRT. Then loaded my express VPN UK settings in to the open WRT. Works fine, was a mare to configure, but I can assure you, it can be done.
The WAP router is connected to the livebox by Ethernet. Both routers have Wi-Fi.
The WAP VPN router is only used for UK tv ( skybox via Ethernet ), as when I use it for googling, I am constantly asked to prove that I am not a robot!!!

I have an Apple TV box connected via wifi and want to install the vpn router. Can’t understand what’s gone wrong, and neither can any of the tech guys who have tried to help. It’ll probably tip me over the edge, but I’m going to talk to Orange tomorrow and ask if the livebox can be replaced.

It's quite a while since I did mine. There is one important change to make to the livebox settings, but I can not what it is. I will take a look at my settings when I get a chance. It is not in the DMZ settings.
I have not mastered the IPV 6. It leaks when turned on at the livebox, so I just use IPV 4.
My setup is adsl. I don't know if fiber will be different.
My secondary router is just that. It is a TP link. It can not be used as a primary router and doesn't have a WAN port .
I have just ditched Sky and bought a Freesat box. I can access Bbc iPlayer, ITVX, My 5 and Netflix without problem.
I use express VPN and have done for several years. I have loaded all the different UK locations to backup files for open VPN. I can then easily change the location my router gives out, should one of the locations go down. I am currently using "Wembley" .
Hope this helps.
Richard

Yes the thread was interesting. We had SOSH fibre installed last week and have made various network changes as a result. My OH even allowed me to play with the TV settings so as I could install a VPN on it. Yeah iPlayer off the set instead of via a laptop or phone, and with Canal+ perfectly happy.
One thing required by the installers which was not on the list: a hairdryer! They wanted to force dry some glue. Thankfully we keep one in the guest room.

The Beauty of VPN is you do NOT have to do it at the Router level, It is for example possible on many devices to configure a VPN directly.
For older devices you can decide to run your internet via a different Router. that in the End will use the default Gateway.

Easiest way that I know to use BBC abroad is:

Get a google Chromecast HD (the white one with the remote).
Use a British Gmail to in to the ChromeCast
Get NordVPN and install it on the ChromeCast. and start the UK VPN connection.
BBC Iplayer ITV and all; the apps you want
And to them with s createdf using a UK VPN on the PC.

It works ok depending on your upstream,
So No VPN congif in the Oranger router required,
The beauty is that the tunnel can start anywhere with in your network

Oh golly gosh yes. OK get Nord VPN and connect to a UK source and there you have it. The livebox is connected into a converter and the routing is like a pipe through the system. We watch UK TV / the BBC through that no trouble and have been for about 10 years. Do tell them that I recommended them to you.

You can then sort the TV out to parallel the computer. Get a cheap router and use that of course but do not leave both WIFI on both router and Livebox running. Switch off the live box wifi. We though either just use the computer screen for TV stuff and the tv for uk tv from satellite. Frankly I cannot understand why the UK TV channels are being like this as it is pointless to try and stop us from watching TV from elsewhere as we techies will find a way around the so called blocks. I suggested that the BBC charge our hospital and have BBC 1 on the tv network FOC and I got that it is due to the various stations stopping the signal being broadcast yet ALL the channels are ALL available in the US. It is a case of the US taking the urine out of the UK. So bxxxer them they want to play silly bxxxers so can we as TV watchers!

We got rid of our VPN router and don't use VPN as a default. Of course when you want to watch TV from a different region, VPN is your friend. We have Express VPN installed on our phones and computers for when we need it. For TV, we use Express VPN app on our Apple TV. It's easy to set up, easy to turn on and off, and works pretty well. Sometimes some streaming services will block us, but Express VPN seems to be pretty good about getting around those blocks quickly.
