Hi,

How long does the verification process take to issue a certificate after induction? I've been waiting for a year and a half after induction. ing the DG office hasn’t helped; they seem to have no clear answers. When I asked if it would take five more years, they replied that it may or may not.

I did my indu

.....During our induction, some people sitting next to me were doing inductions for the 3rd time or more with no certificate in sight. They had submitted their applications as far back as 2009. it was regrettable to hear their stories.
So I should be aiming for 15 more years of waiting and 3 more inductions with no certificate? 💀💀💀

Yep, he did say to the MPs that it takes 12 months to complete the process and issue the Naturalization Certificate. 😑 Could the top brass be completely disconnected from the departments, or is it just pure deception toward the MPs?

You could be right.
But during induction I the DHA guy who was conducting the induction saying some people were getting citizenship so that they can use the SA port to live over seas. So he said the department is planning to reduce the 3 year period to 1 year.
:unsure:The three year out-of-country limit is for PR. There is no such limit for Citizen and unless the Constitution is changed DHA does not have power to impose any limit!

That's right. You can be gone for 20 years, as long as you don't do the things that result into loss of citizenship e.g being in the army that's is at war with SA, acquiring citizenship of another country through marriage without the minister's/DG's written permission, broken anything that you promised in g 'oath of allegiance' that you'll never break, to mention just a few.

If you don't do those things then you can be out of the country as many years as you want.

NB: This question was asked during induction in 2022. And what I have said above, was the response from the DHA official who carried out the induction in Joburg that year.
"acquiring citizenship of another country without the minister's written permission" This is no longer a valid reason as per SCA ruling.... citizens who lost their citizenship by operation of s 6(1)(a) of the South African Citizenship Act 88 of 1995 are deemed not to have lost their citizenship.

Called the Centre
Certificates at DG office for final signature. Turn-around is normally quick quick, you may have your certs by late Dec or early Jan
I like the call center optimism !

Edit... after calling homeaffairs

Indeed, the call center seems optimistic🤞. I was told that a directive will be issued soon. Due to the large number of people awaiting certificates and induction, and the multiple inquiries received, the department has collated all outstanding cases and instructed the Citizenship Section to expedite the issuance process.

For what it's worth, below is the response from "[email protected]". Hopefully, we may see some progress this year.

The department is currently implementing measures to ensure that the processing of all naturalisation applications through its Naturalisation Adjudication Committee are finalised. All queries relating to the Induction/already inducted and/or awaiting Naturalisation certificates will be communicated by the department in due course.

Before 2020, people applied for citizenship without proof of PR. I am inclined to believe that once one applies for proof of PR, then DHA checks how visas/permits were acquired. Thus no need for SIU to investigate people who have already obtained proof of PR.

But if you've dealt with DHA before, then you must know that this is a delay tactic/excuse they will fully utilize.
I think that may not be entirely true. I started my application in 2018 and had to wait for PR verification from VFS for a full year before I could complete my application in 2019. Therefore, I believe the requirement to include proof of PR has been in place since at least 2018.

It is the same response I received two months ago. Nothing new here!
